Who Is In Peril For Sciatica?

When it is about sciatica, virtually anyone and everyone can be victim of this health problem. Nevertheless there are some folks who tend to be at a more serious risk. Are you one of them? Let us find out.

After you reach the middle age mark, you’re more likely to suffer with sciatica. With advancing age, your spine weakens and undergoes many other physical changes that make it more susceptible to the condition. Sciatica is generally due to age related spinal alterations such as disk changes. In certain cases, it may be triggered by stenosis and bone spurs.

Stats say that at the age of Thirty, your intervertebral disk goes through some changes and this is the time when you’re susceptible to developing sciatica. Thus, people who are older than Thirty and those that are near the age of 50 have a larger risk. The reason stays the same that in old age, spinal stenosis usually crops up that may lead the way on to the development of sciatica.

That said, folks who are aged 50 and above are at a lesser risk as compared to the ones who fall in the age range of 30-50 years. This is primarily because people, who fall in the age range of Thirty to 50 years, are way more active due to work, sport activities and other social engagements. Thus, the likelihood of any kind of injury or strain to the backbone is more.

From another viewpoint even those, who live a totally inactive life, are at a greater chance of sciatica. This happens because, when you sit inactive and idle for extended hours, it irritates your sciatic nerve. This may further cause irritation of the nerve and the person may feel the sciatic agony. Therefore if you are one of those people that have to sit on a PC table for 8 to Ten hours then you’re at a greater risk. Beware!

While running or walking continually will help you keep fit ; it could also make you more vulnerable to sciatica. These activities involve the contraction of the piriformis muscles that are found in the hip. So, when you indulge in either of these physical motions ; the muscles have a tendency to tighten up. This leads on to redness of the sciatic nerve and eventually, pain.

Aside from the already mentioned factors, pregnancy and diabetes are some other factors that may increase the chance for sciatica. While diabetes patients are at a higher risk because of increased nerve damage in diabetes, expecting ladies may suffer from the problem due to hormonal changes.

Keep in mind all of these risk factors and if you fall in any of these classes then you should be extra cautious to take care of your back and be safe from sciatica.
